Mekhissi-Benabbad crossed the line in 3:45.60 to finish half a second clear of Norway's Henrik Ingebrigtsen, who was just eight-hundredths ahead of O'Hare.

Speaking afterwards, O'Hare told reporters: "This year's been a bit of a mess so this medal is a great outcome for me. I'm done with my season now, I'll have a few days off now and then get ready for the cross country season."

Gold for Mekhissi-Benabbad somewhat makes up for his disqualification in the 3000m steeplechase.
