England's Jack Oliver wins weightlifting silver

Team England weightlifter Jack Oliver wins silver in the men's 77kg at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Team England weightlifter Jack Oliver has won silver in the men's 77kg category at the Commonwealth Games.

Oliver - who missed out on a podium place by just one kilogram in Glasgow four years ago - failed with two attempts at 171kg in the clean and jerk but still had enough to seal second place.

The 27-year-old - whose overall total was actually worse than he achieved at the 2014 Games - finished six kilograms behind India's Sathish Sivalingam, who successfully defended his Commonwealth title.

Oliver was still comfortably clear of Australian bronze medallist Francois Etoundi, though, due largely to a competition-best 145kg snatch.

The Englishman's only successful attempt at the clean and jerk was at 167kg - the fourth-best of any competitor - but he rarely looked in danger of letting his silver medal position slip.

Oliver is the first Englishman to win a Commonwealth medal in his weight classification this century.
