Team GB women beaten by Russia

Team GB's women water polo team lose 11-9 to Russia to record their fifth defeat of the Olympics.

Russia have condemned Team GB's women to another defeat in the water polo competition after a 11-9 victory in London.

In a tight first quarter, both sides traded goals with a score from Chloe Wilcox in the last 10 seconds to tie the match after eight minutes.

The attacking nature of the contest disappeared in the second period as each team's defensive players started to take control of the game.

However, two goals just before half-time from Francesca Painter-Snell and Wilcox allowed Team GB to move into a 5-4 lead at the interval.

Russia were able to find their offensive flair in the third quarter and converted four goals to Team GB's two with the hosts trailing by a single point heading into the final period.

Two goals from either side at the start of the fourth quarter were followed by a crucial point from Sofya Konukh to extend Russia's lead.

A third goal for Wilcox increased the home crowd's hopes of seeing their side draw level but an eleventh Russian point confirmed defeat for Team GB.
