Jo-Wilfried Tsonga powers past Jarkko Nieminen

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga drops just five games on his way to a comfortable win over Jarkko Nieminen at the US Open.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has powered into the second round of the US Open with a ruthless display to see off Jarkko Nieminen.

The 19th seed dropped just five games on the way to a 6-3 6-1 6-1 victory against the experienced Finnish hitter.

Despite his game favouring the hard courts of Flushing Meadows, Tsonga has only ever reached the last eight on one occasion, but he showed against Nieminen that he possesses the firepower to progress further in the tournament.

The Frenchman fired down nine aces on the way to taking the opening set, before he raced through the second with two breaks of serve.

Tsonga was equally efficient in the third, dropping just three points behind his serve to seal victory in just 92 minutes.
