The 33-year-old recovered from losing his opening set to earn a 4-6 7-5 6-1 6-0 win against his Moldovan opponent at Flushing Meadows.

Ferrer, who has reached the semi-finals in the tournament twice, had led 4-3 in the opening set, before losing consecutive service games as Albot took a surprise lead.

However, the Spaniard quickly broke his opponent in the first game of the second set and held on to win 7-5 and level the scores.

The next set proved to be far more one-sided as Ferrer broke Albot three times to take the lead, and he repeated the feat in the final set without dropping a game to win the match and set up a second-round clash against Filip Krajinovic.
