Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes down Albert Ramos-Vinolas at Shanghai Masters

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beats Roger Federer's conqueror Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters 6-7(5) 7-5 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has ended Albert Ramos-Vinolas's run at the Shanghai Masters with a three-set victory in the third round.

Ramos-Vinolas stunned defending champion and world number two Roger Federer in the last 32 yesterday, but could not take down another top-20 player in Tsonga today.

The Spaniard did take the first set against Tsonga, edging the tie-break 7-5 after he fought back from 5-2 down by winning five of the last six games.

The second set was extremely tight until the 11th game when Ramos afforded Tsonga a break-point chance, and the Frenchman took it before serving it out 7-5 to force a decider.

At the start of the third, Ramos-Vinolas was put under heavy pressure by Tsonga, but held firm and saved four break points in his opening two service games.

However, Tsonga wore him down soon after to move ahead and then sealed victory 6-4 in a match that lasted almost three hours.

The 16th seed will next face either Kei Nishikori or Kevin Anderson in the quarter-finals.
