Stanislas Wawrinka wins five-set battle with Richard Gasquet

Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka overturns a two-set deficit to beat Richard Gasquet in the fourth round of the French Open.

Stanislas Wawrinka fought back from two sets down against Richard Gasquet to progress to the quarter-finals of the French Open, winning 6-7 4-6 6-4 7-5 8-6.

The Swiss player struggled with an upper leg problem in the opening set that restricted his movement.

Gasquet played a variety of shots to earn a break and seal the set, before racing to a 4-0 lead in the second.

The ninth seed sought help from the trainer and tried to fight his way back into the set, but he could not overturn his opponent's lead.

Wawrinnka was unhappy with some slow decisions by a line judge, leading to a delay while he discussed the matter with the umpire, which eventually resulted in new judges being brought onto the court.

The momentum was with Wawrinka in the third set, and he secured an early break to get back into the match, while the Frenchman seemed to lose some of the pace that had helped him take the first two sets.

The seventh seed needed a medical time out as the lengthy encounter began to take its tole, but he manage to shake off the problem, which had been restricting his movement around the court, costing him the fourth set.

Gasquet regained his range of movement throughout the deciding set and had a chance to break at 5-5, but Wawrinka pulled out some big serves to hold.

A couple of poor serves in the final game of the match allowed Wawrinka to bring up a match point, and he took it with a winning forehand down the sideline.

Wawrinka will face Rafael Nadal in the final eight.
