Sloane Stephens reaches first major quarter-finals

19-year-old American Sloane Stephens makes a Grand Slam quarter-final for the first time with a three-set win over Bojana Jovanovski at the Australian Open.

American teenager Sloane Stephens continued her breakthrough run at this year's Australian Open with a 6-1 3-6 7-5 win over Bojana Jovanovski earlier today.

Stephens went on the attack from the outset and took advantage of a slow start from the Serb to claim the first set.

Both players traded a series of unforced errors in the second but it was Jovanovski who showed determination to force a decider.

Mistakes came from both sides of the net in a tense finale but it was the 19-year-old who started to regain her touch at the baseline and squeezed home by a single break of serve.

Stephens will now play in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time later this week against either Serena Williams or Maria Kirilenko.
