Dan Evans secures place in Australian Open main draw

British number five Dan Evans qualifies for the Australian Open for the first time in his career with victory over Bjorn Fratangelo.

Dan Evans has ensured that Great Britain will have four representatives in the men's singles at the Australian Open after winning his final qualifying match with Bjorn Fratangelo.

The British number five had defeated top seed Luca Vanni and Amir Weintraub to move to within one match of the main draw, and he was confident heading into his clash with the American after emerging victorious from their previous two meetings.

The Birmingham hitter took the first set but he saw himself pegged back by Fratangelo, the world number 131, in the second to set up a tense decider.

However, Evans powered through the third without dropping a game to wrap up a 7-5 4-6 6-0 triumph in Melbourne.

The 25-year-old has been drawn to play 19th seed Feliciano Lopez, but Fratangelo will also feature in the first round after getting into the draw as a lucky loser.
