Venus Williams hoping to build up some momentum

Venus Williams says that remaining focused was the key to overcoming Agnieszka Radwanska in the last 16 of the Australian Open this morning.

Venus Williams has targeted a consistent run of form having reached the quarter-final stage of a Grand Slam for the first time since 2010.

The 18th seed has endured a tough few years, although she appears to be reaching something close to her best following this morning's 6-3 2-6 6-1 victory over Agnieszka Radwanska.

Williams fell behind early on in the deciding set, before battling back to claim a huge win which will see her take on fellow American Madison Keys in the last eight of the competition.

Asked about her mentality in the closing stages, she said: "Honestly, I don't know. I just felt like in the third set I was trying to get back to the form that I was in in the first set.

"I didn't do a lot wrong in that first game. It was just overhit some, missed an easy one that would have definitely helped my cause. It was frustrating but I stayed focused and I wanted to just continue playing like I did in the first game because it was really the right way to play

"I think a year ago I had a lot more trouble with putting a lot of good points together. That comes with just being able to play, playing consistently. I think just being able to build that momentum up, play matches, start to play a lot of good points in a row has been a difference."

Williams's best finish at the Australian Open came back in 2003 when she reached the final.
