Thomas wins 200m butterfly gold for Wales
Welsh swimmer Alys Thomas sets a new Commonwealth Games record on her way to gold in the women's 200m butterfly event.

Alys Thomas has secured gold for Wales in the pool, in the process setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the women's 200m butterfly event.

The 27-year-old was left stunned by her victory, having shaved two seconds off her personal best time to finish in 2:05.45 and collect Wales's only gold medal in the pool.

As a result Australia were denied another top-of-the-podium finish, although they did claim the other two medals on offer. Silver went the way of 18-year-old Laura Taylor, who came from fifth at the halfway point to finish with a time of 2:07.39, while bronze went to her teammate Emma McKeon, who relinquished the lead to Thomas after the first 50m.

The Isle of Man's Charlotte Atkinson was in contention to medal until the final length, her time of 2:08.50 less than half a second behind McKeon.

England had two swimmers in the race - Emily Large, who clocked in at 2:10.96 for seventh place, and Laura Stephens, who brought up the rear on 2:11.46.
