Marrit Steenbergen edges out 'mini Michael Phelps' for gold in Baku

Marrit Steenburgen beats Arina Openysheva in the women's 100m freestyle to pick up the Netherlands' fourth gold at the European Games.

Netherlands swimmer Marrit Steenbergen has edged out Russian star Arina Openysheva in the women's 100m freestyle to win gold at the European Games.

Having been compared to Michael Phelps and with two gold medals already in Baku this week, all eyes were on Openysheva as she went into the contest hoping to further justify comparisons with the legendary American.

However, it was Steenbergen that stole the headlines as the 15-year-old posted a Games record of 53.97s to beat her Russian counterpart, who finished on 54.45s.

There was another medal for Russia further back, though, as Mariia Kameneva took the bronze in a time of 55.19s.

Great Britain's Darcy Deakin finished fifth on 56.94s.
