Fran Halsall "surprised" to secure new Commonwealth record in 50m freestyle heat

Fran Halsall admits that she was "surprised" to set a new Commonwealth Games record in the 50m freestyle heat in Glasgow this morning.

Team England's Fran Halsall has expressed her shock at winning her 50m freestyle heat in record time at Glasgow 2014.

This morning, the 24-year-old secured a new Commowealth record by qualifying for the semi-final of the event, which gets underway this evening.

Halsall now has eight Commonwealth medals to her name after she helped England secure silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay last night.

"I'm a bit surprised actually!" Halsall told reporters. "After a late night last night, I was keeping it all low key this morning.

"My coach was like, 'just get to 25 and then switch off and just make sure you get through'. I was like, 'okay I did that,' and I was like, 'oh, that's actually quite quick!'. It's quite a confidence boost that I'm in good form and I've got more to come hopefully."

England currently have four Commonwealth swimming medals, while Australia lead the way on seven.
