Adam Thomas: 'Wales defeat is heartbreaking'

Wales rugby sevens captain Adam Thomas describes his side's defeat to Australia at the Commonwealth Games as "heartbreaking" having blown a 19-point lead.

Wales captain Adam Thomas has described his side's defeat to Australia in the quarter-finals of the rugby sevens at the Commonwealth Games as "heartbreaking".

The Welsh looked to be well on course for an upset as they raced into a 19-0 lead, but Australia fought their way back into the match before eventually clinching their semi-final spot on the last play of the game.

Thomas admitted that he was "gutted" following the defeat, but does not believe that his side's fast start saw tiredness play a part later in the match.

"I'm gutted. There's just no feeling at the moment. We started really well, and to lose it is heartbreaking to be honest," Thomas told Sports Mole.

"The Aussies are fit blokes and they'll always play the game for the full 14 minutes. We thought that if we made a very good start then it would have carried us through, but to lose it on the last pay of the game like that, in any game of sevens, is heartbreaking, especially in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games.

"[Tiredness wasn't the key] at all. That last play before they scored, we could have scored. I think both teams were out on their feet to be honest. That's just the way it goes in sevens."

Wales will now face Kenya in the semi-finals of the plate this evening.
