Leinster Rugby have defeated Northampton Saints 40-7 away from home in the Heineken Cup Pool 1.

Winger Luke Fitzgerald scored a hat-trick of tries for the Irish side as they left Northampton's chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the competition in tatters.

Jamie Heaslip, Eoin Reddan and Brian O'Driscoll were the other try-scorers for Leinster at Franklin's Gardens, while Lee Dickson hit one back for the hosts.

The result leaves Northampton third in Pool 1, eight points behind Leinster, who extend their unbeaten run against English sides to 10 matches.
