Nathan Hines hails "immense" Paul O'Connell

Nathan Hines says that Paul O'Connell's hamstring injury "takes nothing away" from what he has achieved in his career.

Scotland coach Nathan Hines has paid tribute to Paul O'Connell, describing the Ireland lock as an immense player.

O'Connell's international career has come to an end after he tore his hamstring in the 24-9 victory over France on Sunday, meaning he can no longer play a part in the Rugby World Cup for the Six Nations champions.

However, Hines has suggested that this injury will not diminish the legacy that the former Munster second row has left on the game.

"It is unlucky to finish with an injury, but it takes nothing away from what Paul has done in the game," Hines told reporters.

"He's been an immense player and I enjoyed playing with him and against him.

"Whatever happens next, I'm sure he will come back even stronger."

Hines and O'Connell were both part of the Lions squad which lost a three-match Test series in South Africa in 2009.
