England, Australia will pay a visit to Christchurch before the World Cup after the city was hit by an earthquake in February.

England and Australia have announced that they will visit Christchurch, New Zealand ahead of their opening fixtures in the World Cup.

The two teams were scheduled to play World Cup matches in the city until it suffered an earthquake six months ago, causing organisers to cancel the fixtures.

Despite the decision, both teams have been welcomed to spend time in Christchurch before they kick off their World Cup campaign.

“Both teams were due to play matches in Christchurch, but the devastating earthquake of February 22 of course changed those plans so we are grateful that the team are able to do their bit to raise the spirits of the city,” said RNZ 2011 CEO Martin Snedden.

“I thank Martin Johnson and Australian coach Robbie Deans for making team members available for these visits during what is an intense time for any RWC team."

The Wallabies will take part in a fundraiser as well as visit schools and hospitals in the area.

Martin Johnson’s side are due to fly to the city on September 7, while Australia are scheduled to arrive on September 28.
