Simon Middleton named new England Women's rugby coach

Simon Middleton is announced as the new head coach of the England Women's rugby team.

Simon Middleton has been appointed the new head coach of the England Women's rugby team.

The 49-year-old, who currently coaches the Sevens side, will combine both roles on a deal until 2017.

Middleton takes over from Gary Street, who stood down from the role last month after guiding the team to World Cup glory.

"It is a really exciting time to be involved," Middleton is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. "For me personally, this is a fantastic opportunity and a challenge I am really looking forward to. I am coming into this role when women's rugby is in a great place.

"Being part of the team that won the World Cup last year was the pinnacle of my career, but we want England Rugby to continue to have those successes."

Middleton has previously worked at Leeds Carnegie under Stuart Lancaster.
