Leeds Rhinos too strong for rivals Wigan Warriors

Leeds Rhinos close the gap on Super League leaders St Helens and inflict more early-season misery on Wigan Warriors with a 26-14 victory at Headingley.

Leeds Rhinos closed the gap on Super League leaders St Helens with a 26-14 victory over rivals Wigan Warriors this evening.

A fifth win of the season takes the Rhinos to within two points of the Saints, but Wigan are already off the pace having lost three of their opening six games.

Matty Smith gave the Warriors an early lead with a try inside the opening 10 minutes, but Leeds soon overturned that deficit.

Adam Cuthbertson and Ash Handley went over either side of the 20-minute mark before Brad Singleton crossed to put the hosts 16-6 ahead.

Wigan pulled within four by half time as Smith added the extras to a Joe Burgess effort, but the Rhinos ran away from them in the second half.

Liam Sutcliffe, who also contributed three conversions, touched down on the hour mark and Rob Burrow made sure of the points with Leeds' fifth try on 67 minutes.
