Reeva Steenkamp's cousin: 'Oscar Pistorius needs sufficient punishment'

Reeva Steenkamp's cousin Kim Martin tells a court that Oscar Pistorius needs "sufficient punishment" for killing his girlfriend.

Reeva Steenkamp's cousin Kim Martin has told the High Court in Pretoria that Oscar Pistorius "needs to pay for what he has done".

The Paralympic champion is expected to be sentenced tomorrow after he was found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter), which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

The double amputee shot dead his girlfriend Steenkamp by firing four gunshots through a toilet door at his home in South Africa in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year.

The prosecution are calling for Judge Thokozile Masipa to order a jail term, while Pistorius's defence believe that a three-year house arrest would be a more fitting punishment.

Today, Ms Martin told the court: "My family are not people who are seeking revenge, we just feel that to shoot somebody behind a door that is unarmed, that is harmless, needs sufficient punishment."

Pistorius denied murder by claiming that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired the gun.
