Met Police launch investigation into child sex abuse allegations

The Metropolitan Police becomes the latest force to launch an investigation into widespread child sex abuse allegations in football, focusing solely on clubs in London.

The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into widespread allegations of historical abuse in football.

A team of officers from the force's sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command team will focus solely on clubs in London.

The Met would not state how many allegations have been made, or how many clubs are under investigation, but the National Police Chief's Council has revealed that hundreds of people have so far come forward across the country.

Chief superintendent Ivan Balhatchet told BBC Sport that all claims will be taken seriously and "dealt with sensitively", while also urging others to continue coming forward by contacting their local police force or the NSPCC.

A total of 21 police forces are currently investigating allegations, spanning across Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England.
