Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been fined £1,245 after admitting common assault and being drunk and disorderly at the Stevenage railway station.

The 46-year-old could have been given six months in prison after pleading guilty to being drunk during an incident that involved the former footballer grabbing a ticket collector by the throat.

The fine was issued at the Stevenage Magistrates' Court today following his guilty plea for one charge of common assault, while the second charge relating to an alleged assault of his ex-wife Sheryl was dropped.

The incident, which occurred on July 4, came after Gascoigne carried out a stint at a rehab facility in the United States in a bid to end his alcohol addiction.
