World number one tennis star Novak Djokovic is named goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.

World number one tennis star Novak Djokovic has been named as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.

The 28-year-old sportsman, who has won nine Grand Slam titles in his career so far, has previously helped the organisation tackle problems for vulnerable children.

"I am honoured to have become a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and to continue to help defend and uphold children's rights and provide access to early childhood care and development for every girl and every boy," Djokovic said in a statement.

"The early years of life are crucial. When well nurtured and cared for in their earliest years, children are more likely to survive, to grow in a healthy way, to have fewer illnesses, to develop thinking, language, emotional and social skills and become productive and successful citizens of society.

"I am committed to helping UNICEF provide quality early care and development to children, especially those who are most vulnerable, to help them build a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities."

Djokovic is currently preparing for next week's US Open.
