Olympic diver Tom Daley: 'It felt like a release when I revealed that I'm gay'

Olympic diver Tom Daley admits that being open about his sexuality back in 2013 felt like a release.

Olympic diver Tom Daley has admitted that a weight was lifted when he revealed to the world that was in a same-sex relationship in a YouTube video two years ago.

The 21-year-old confirmed in December 2013 that he is in a relationship with a man, later revealed to be Oscar-winning director Dustin Lance Black, two decades Daley's senior.

In an interview with CNN's Human to Hero, Daley admitted that coming out to the public allowed him to stay focused on his career.

"If anything, it was a bonus because it took a lot of weight off my shoulders and I was able to compete and train as normal," said Daley.

The Olympic bronze medallist added that it feels "natural" for him to communicate with his 2.5 million followers on Twitter.

"I have grown up doing it, so it's natural to me to engage with people on social networks," said Daley. "I don't think about it, I just do it."

On Wednesday, the Brit won gold alongside Rebecca Gallantree in the first ever mixed team event at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
