Anthony Crolla suffers fractured skull in burglar attack

British lightweight Anthony Crolla suffers a fractured skull and ankle after attempting to apprehend two people who had burgled his next door neighbour's house.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that Anthony Crolla is in a "stable condition" in Oldham hospital after the British lightweight suffered a fractured skull and broken ankle after being attacked by two burglars.

Crolla, who was due to fight for the WBA title in January, is said to have apprehended one of the offenders before being struck across the head with either a "brick or concrete slab", with the fall resulting in the Manchester boxer suffering a broken ankle.

Hearn is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "He confronted burglars at his home and was hit on the head by either a brick or a concrete slab.

"He suffered head injuries and is in hospital where they are carrying out a scan. Unfortunately, the January 23 fight is off but our concerns right now are with Ant and his family."

Crolla has won 29 of his 35 contests in the paid ranks.
