Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has expressed his gratitude towards Northumbria Police for arresting a man who is alleged to have racially abused him on Twitter.

The talkSPORT presenter reported a racist tweet to the authorities earlier this week and the police have confirmed that a 21-year-old man has been arrested.

Collymore tweeted: "Many thanks to Greater Manchester and Northumbria Police forces for their prompt response to racism on Twitter."

Northumbria Police said: "A 21-year-old Sunderland man has been arrested on suspicion of publishing written material to stir up racial hatred and is currently in police custody helping police with their enquiries."

Collymore has previously reported incidents of racial abuse received via the social network site.
