The Football Association failed to fulfil its promise of collecting money for Wayne Rooney on the night of his England farewell, according to a report.

Wayne Rooney's charity reportedly missed out on thousands of pounds after the Football Association failed to fulfil a promise to the England striker.

Thursday evening's international friendly between the Three Lions and USA at Wembley Stadium was used to helped raise money for the Rooney Foundation.

The FA planned to have various bucket collection points inside and outside the ground so that supporters could donate loose change.

According to The Sun, however, the 68,000 in attendance at Wembley could not donate any money as there was not a single personal collecting cash on the night, despite the FA holding a licence to collect charitable donations.

The report suggests that the governing body has put the blunder down to a lack of time to set up the collection areas and to find volunteers, with permits taking up to 10 days.

Rooney came on for the final half-hour of England's 3-0 win over the United States to earn his 120th and final senior cap.
