Charlton Athletic ban supporter for abusive online messages

Charlton Athletic ban a 33-year-old supporter from attending future home matches after receiving several abusive comments on social media.

Charlton Athletic have banned a season-ticket holder from attending future matches at The Valley after receiving "a number of discriminatory, abusive and threatening comments" on social media.

The 33-year-old individual responded in an abusive manner after Charlton announced the formation of Proud Valiants, the club's first LGBT supporters' group.

"The club would like to remind all supporters that it will not tolerate discrimination of any kind and that Charlton Athletic is a football club which offers a sense of belonging, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, disability or religion," head of matchday operations Mick Everett told the club website.

"While we would have reserved the right to retain the individual's payment for his 2015-16 season ticket, we decided to draw a line under the incident by offering to refund his money and excluding him from all home games."

Anti-discriminatory organisation Kick It Out has also passed on the offensive comments to the police.
