Atletico Nacional: 'Award Copa Sudamericana to Chapecoense'

Atletico Nacional reportedly request that the Copa Sudamericana be awarded to Chapecoense in the wake of the air crash involving their opponents.

Atletico Nacional have asked CONMEBOL to award the Copa Sudamericana to Chapecoense after their opponents were involved in an air crash on Monday night.

A plane, which is believed to have had 72 passengers and nine crew on board, came down in a mountainous area outside Medellin at 10.15pm local time, and it has since been confirmed that all but five people have died in the crash.

Chapecoense had been on their way to compete in the Copa Sudamericana final when their plane came down in Colombia, with the first leg having been scheduled to take place on Wednesday evening.

All football in South America has since been suspended but it has been widely reported that Atletico Nacional have requested that Chapecoense be awarded the trophy as a mark of respect to their opponents.

Chapecoense had reached the final of the competition for the first time, just two years after they had earned promotion to Brazil's top flight.
