Seventeen people were reportedly arrested following the frantic scenes on the pitch at Ashton Gate after the Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash between Bristol City and Bristol Rovers.

City fans invaded the pitch, with the majority heading towards the players after witnessing their side reach the second round of the competition courtesy of a 2-1 win over their rivals.

It has emerged that 17 arrests were made on the night, while three police officers were injured when trying to calm the scenes, according to Sky Sports News.

Fans ignored calls from the tannoy to leave the pitch, while there were also disturbances in the stands, prompting City manager Sean O'Driscoll to describe the incident as "disgraceful".
