Welsh gymnast Clinton Purnell delighted to clinch his best score in Glasgow

Wales gymnast Clinton Purnell chats to Sports Mole after finishing seventh in the men's all-around final at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Team Wales gymnast Clinton Purnell may not have won a place on the podium in this afternoon's individual all-round final at the Commonwealth Games, but he did leave the Hydro in Glasgow with his best score of the year.

The 25-year-old finished seventh with an overall score of 82.298 after competing on floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar, while England's Max Whitlock took gold.

After this afternoon's final, Sports Mole grabbed a quick chat with Purnell to discuss targets of improvement, if he has exceeded his expectations, and what he made of the Welsh women's team making history by clinching bronze yesterday.

How would you assess your performance today?

"Quite pleased for what I've done, yeah. Well actually, really pleased! No major errors at all. My best score this year, so I'm really, really happy with that."

What were your expectations heading into Glasgow?

"I wasn't expecting to maintain or especially better my place in qualifying. I was really pleased with eighth in qualifiers and I was just trying to stick as close to that as I could. To come back and get a seventh place and a better score again, I'm really happy."

You must be proud of the Welsh girls making history and winning team bronze yesterday.

"Incredible! It was just an amazing moment. The whole thing so far for Welsh gymnastics has been just amazing. We couldn't believe it - they fully deserve that medal. They all went through as well as they could and it just turned out with an awesome result."

What improvements do you think you need to make moving forward?

"I've got a few ideas of things like parallel bars and high bar. They're my pieces - I was doing quite well in my first few pieces, [but] on 'pb' and high bar, I dropped back a couple of scores here. So, I need to fit in a few more bigger skills on them and then just try to score higher."

Purnell will also compete in the floor, rings and pommel horse finals this week.
