Team Wales gymnast Francesca Jones: 'I'm in good shape'

Team Wales gymnast and flag bearer Francesca Jones tells Sports Mole that she is ready for Glasgow 2014 despite an injury-plagued build-up.

Welsh rhythmic gymnast Francesca Jones has insisted that she is ready for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and in "good shape" ahead of the start of competition tomorrow.

Jones is appearing at her third Commonwealths and was yesterday given the honour of flying the Welsh flag at tonight's opening ceremony at Celtic Park.

Sports Mole spoke to the 23-year-old at the Athletes' Village, and she was certain that she can emulate or go better than her silver medal in Delhi at the last Games, despite an injury-plagued two years after the London Olympics.

"It has been up and down the whole two years [since London], but I've had, touch wood, the best stretch of training since my operation. So, fingers crossed. I'm in good shape," she said.

Jones is competing in a rhythmic team for the first time at a Commonwealth Games - in Melbourne 2006 and Delhi 2010 she was the only rhythmic Welsh gymnast.

"It's been phenomenal [to have rhythmic teammates]," she added. "In the past I'd always be on my own so to have the support and train together and compete together - it's been a really special build-up for me."

Jones will fly the Welsh flag later tonight before she begins competition tomorrow at the SSE Hydro. The rhythmic section of the gymnastics takes place from tomorrow until Saturday.
