Three Brazilian gymnasts 'suspended for racially abusing a teammate'

Three Brazilian gymnasts are reportedly suspended for 30 days after allegedly racially abusing a teammate.

The Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation has reportedly suspended three athletes after they were caught allegedly racially abusing a black teammate.

A video, which was obtained by newspaper O Globo, appears to show Arthur Nory Mariano, Fellipe Arakawa and Henrique Flores tell Angelo Assumpcao that when a smartphone works, the screen turns white, and when it fails, the screen turns black.

The trio are also alleged to have said to Assumpcao that supermarket bags are white and rubbish bags are black.

According to the Morning Star, the three gymnasts involved have been handed 30-day suspensions, which prevents them from competing in any national or international events, and they are banned from any financial gain.

Following the punishment, the trio have apologised to their teammate and Assumpcao is quoted in a video as saying: "There are no hard feelings. We are friends."

A local gymnastics sport tribunal will oversee the case.
