Rory McIlroy ends the year as world number one by clinching the World Tour Championship in Dubai.

World number one Rory McIlroy ended the year by winning the World Tour Championship in Dubai this afternoon.

The Irishman went into today's final round with a share of the lead on 17-under with Luke Donald.

The duo were challenged by Englishman Justin Rose for a while, but McIlroy claimed the title as a result of five straight birdies on the last five holes.

"Well done to @McIlroyRory! 5 birdies in a row to finish off a season that will be difficult to be bettered!!! #whataplayer #truenumber1," fellow golfer Eduardo Molinari tweeted shortly after his success.

McIlroy's success means that he will end the year top of the rankings.
