Dustin Johnson maintained his overnight three-shot lead to win the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai ahead of Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell.

The American carded a six-under par 66 on Sunday to finish 24-under par, with Poulter three shots back having matched Johnson's score on his final round at the Sheshan Golf Club.

McDowell closed on 20-under par, with other European Ryder Cup stars Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy directly behind him on the leaderboard.

Johnson three putted on the first, with Poulter picking up some early shots before he was pegged back by the eventual winner, who birdied eight and nine to take a share of the lead.

Both players birdied the 13th and 14th to set up an exciting finish, but when Poulter failed to get up and down from the greenside bunker on 15 and Johnson chipped in for an eagle two on the next hole, the 29-year-old established a two-shot advantage.

He moved further clear by holing from eight feet on 17, and there was to be no repeat of Johnson's double bogey on the final hole of Saturday's round as the American hung on for his eighth PGA Tour victory.
