Matthew Fitzpatrick crowned US Amateur champion

Sheffield's Matthew Fitzpatrick becomes the first British player to win the US Amateur Championship since 1911.

Sheffield teenager Matthew Fitzpatrick has become the first British player to win the US Amateur Championship in over 100 years.

The 18-year-old, who recently finished tied for 44th in the Open Championship, beat Oliver Goss 4&3 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts to emulate a feat achieved only once previously by Harold Hilton in 1911.

In July, Fitzpatrick completed four rounds at Muirfield in 10-over-par - a performance good enough to win the Silver Medal.

He is due to study at the Chicago's NorthWestern University - the alma mater of current PGA Tour star Luke Donald - from September.
