Rory McIlroy has said that he was encouraged by his performance in the final round of this year's US PGA Championship.

The defending champion, who began Sunday six shots off the pace, fell out of contention by taking seven at the par-four fifth.

However, he responded well to card a level-par 70, which left him tied for eighth on three under.

"Obviously it was disappointing but I fought back well," he told reporters. "I was four-under at that point and had just missed a short putt on the fourth to get to five.

"After doing that I just wanted to post as good a finish as I could.

"I saw a lot of great signs out there today. Hopefully I can just bring that through to the next few weeks and have a strong finish to the season."

Jason Dufner finished the Oakhill event on 10 under overall, seeing off a strong challenge from Jim Furyk to claim first place.
