David Howell: "Long road from the depths of despair"

David Howell says that the last seven years have been tough and dedicates his victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship to those who have stood by him.

David Howell has dedicated his victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship to those who supported him during his seven-year barren spell.

The 38-year-old won his first title since the 2006 BMW Championship by beating America's Peter Uihlein in a playoff, and described winning at St Andrews - the 'Home of Golf - an "amazing" feeling.

"It's incredible," Howell told reporters. "I have never played in an Open Championship here but to win a golf tournament as a professional at the Home of Golf is quite amazing and I am really thrilled.

"It's been a long, long road from the depths of despair. I have had a lot of support from people around me and this is as much for them as it is for me."

The title was Howell's fifth on the European Tour.
