Rory McIlroy: 'Darren Clarke perfect fit for Europe'

Rory McIlroy joins a number of his peers by backing Darren Clarke to become Europe's next Ryder Cup captain.

World number one Rory McIlroy has given his backing to Darren Clarke as the focus turns to who will captain Europe at the Ryder Cup in 2016.

After playing a key role in winning the event at Gleneagles on the weekend, McIlroy has suggested that his fellow Northern Irishman should be selected to lead the team in Hazeltine.

"Obviously there have been a few names thrown about there, but I have said with a Ryder Cup being in America, I feel that Darren Clarke would be the perfect man to lead the team there, just because he has such a great reputation in the States," the 25-year-old told reporters.

"The fans really love him there and he has got a good rapport with everyone. I think he would be the right man to do it next time at Hazeltine."

McIlroy revealed on Wednesday that he would like to be considered as a possible captain later in his career.
