Lewis Hamilton: 'Fans want close competition'

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton admits that another season of dominance for him and Mercedes would be 'boring' for fans.

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has conceded that another dominant season for Mercedes would be 'boring' for fans.

Mercedes cruised to the constructors' championship last term, setting a new record for number of wins in a season with 16, 11 of which came courtesy of Hamilton.

The Brit pipped teammate Nico Rosberg to the drivers' championship and, having broken Red Bull's four-year spell of dominance last term, admitted that a similar reign for his team could become tiresome for fans.

"A year of dominance is a great thing for a team as a whole, but as a racing driver I'm sure the fans will want to see close competition," Hamilton is quoted as saying by PA.

Asked whether fans would become bored should he win the title by August, Hamilton added: "Personally, I would get bored, but I can only speak for myself.

"If I was a fan watching and the championship was won by then it wouldn't look so good, would it? But then it's almost impossible to win it by then, and if you look at most of the recent seasons they've gone down to the last race."

The new Formula 1 season gets underway this weekend in Australia, with Hamilton the current favourite to lift a third title.
