The Mercedes man went four tenths of a second quicker than Force India's Nico Hulkenberg, while Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was third-fastest.

Esteban Gutierrez, Kamui Kobayashi, Jules Bianchi, Marcus Ericsson and Britain's Max Chilton failed to make Q2.

Meanwhile, Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado did not run and will therefore race at the stewards' discretion on Sunday.
