Jenson Button: 'McLaren can challenge Mercedes in the future'

Jenson Button insists that there is "hope" for McLaren going forward despite a disappointing opening weekend to the new Formula 1 season.

Jenson Button has insisted that McLaren can challenge Mercedes in the future despite currently being a "long way behind" the reigning constructors' champions.

McLaren began the new season in disappointing fashion as reserve driver Kevin Magnussen, in for the concussed Fernando Alonso, failed to make the grid, while Button finished last in the Australian Grand Prix.

Mercedes are again expected to dominate this season having picked up yet another one-two in Australia, but Button sees "hope" for his team going forward.

"We're a hell of a long way behind, but I feel we have something we can mould into something very special in the future, which is very exciting," Button is quoted as saying by PA.

"Being 1.5 seconds off the pace and knowing you've peaked with your package, that's got to hurt.

"Whereas at least we have a glimmer of hope we can possibly challenge Mercedes one day."

McLaren were one of just two teams who failed to pick up a point in the season-opening race.
