Martin Whitmarsh says that he hopes Lewis Hamilton joining Mercedes is just a "gap year" from McLaren.

Martin Whitmarsh has confirmed that he would consider re-signing Lewis Hamilton to McLaren.

The 2008 world champion is leaving the Woking-based team at the end of the season to join Mercedes.

McLaren's team principal told Sky Sports News: "We'd have him back, yes. So let's hope it's just a gap year."

The 27-year-old has said that he will miss the team, having worked with them for 14 years.

Hamilton was fastest in yesterday's practice sessions for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
