Bahrain to switch to night race in 2014?

Bahrain Grand Prix chairman Zayed Al Zayani says that changes are being made to stage next year's race at night.

Zayed Al Zayani has announced his plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Bahrain GP by staging next year's race at night.

The Bahrain International Circuit chairman revealed that major refurbishment, including a high-tech lighting system, is underway, which will bring the venue into line with safety requirements.

Reports suggest that Bahrain is due to be named as the season-opening race for 2014, but Al Zayani has asked Bernie Ecclestone to push the provisional March 2 date back so that the changes can be properly tested.

"We requested from Bernie not to be the first Grand Prix of the year because we are undergoing a major refurbishment of our track to commemorate the 10th anniversary," Al Zayani told AUTOSPORT.

"We didn't want to be squeezed for time. There are many [changes], but the highlight will be a night race."

Singapore is currently the only race staged at night, while Abu Dhabi begins at dusk.
