Wolverhampton Wanderers stroll past Cheltenham Town

Goals from Bakary Sako, David Edwards and Leon Clarke earn Wolverhampton Wanderers a comfortable 3-1 victory over League Two Cheltenham in their opening pre-season game.

Three goals in the space of 12 minutes either side of half time saw Wolverhampton Wanderers record a comfortable 3-1 friendly win over Cheltenham Town this evening.

Bakary Sako, David Edwards and Leon Clarke all found the net as Wolves began their Championship pre-season with victory at their League Two hosts on Friday.

After 35 minutes of lethargic action, Sako opened the scoring from the penalty spot, dinking down the middle from 12 yards after Robins keeper Scott Brown rushed off his line and caught Scott Golbourne.

Edwards doubled his side's advantage only two minutes later when, after Sako had embarked on a mazy run down the wing, he drilled in powerfully with his left foot from a Nouha Dicko layoff.

Kenny Jackett made plenty of changes at the break, but Wolves picked up where they left off as Leon Clarke ran onto a Liam McAlinden flick-on to run clear of his marker and find the bottom corner.

Matt Richards grabbed a consolation for Cheltenham in front of 1,705 fans at Whaddon Road, with a precise free kick on the hour mark making it 3-1, and substitute Town stopper Trevor Carson ensured that it would finish that way.
