Junior Hoilett scores twice as Blackburn Rovers secure a vital 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A Junior Hoilett double secured a vital win for Blackburn Rovers as they overcame Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 this afternoon.

It was Wolves who started the match the stronger and teenager David Davis, making his first start, found Kevin Doyle with a cross after five minutes, but the Irish striker headed over from close range.

The home side again went close moments later after good work from Steven Fletcher, but he could not find Matthew Jarvis with his low cross.

Blackburn began to exert some pressure as the half progressed, however, and Yakubu came close with a volley after good work from Mauro Formica after 11 minutes.

The away side again went close moments later via Formica, but his effort drifted just wide.

Wolves gained control of possession in the latter stages of the half, but it was Blackburn who continued to create the better openings, with Morten Gamst Pedersen proving a constant threat.

Blackburn took the lead after 43 minutes when Junior Hoilett found the bottom corner after a throw from Pedersen, to give the away side a half-time lead.

Wolves so nearly drew the game level moments after the interval when Jarvis found Fletcher, but Paul Robinson made a smart save.

Blackburn moved 2-0 ahead after 69 minutes when Hoilett added his second of the afternoon with a fine finish from outside the area.

Wolves so nearly cut the score to 2-1 after 73 minutes, but Davis could only fire high and wide when presented with the ball in the middle of the area.

The home side continued to push in the latter stages, and Fletcher came close with a header after 76 minutes following good work from Doyle.

Ronald Zubar and Nenad Milijas both had fine chances for Wolves towards the end but to no avail, as Blackburn held on for a vital three points.

Wolves will look to return to winning ways when they host Manchester United next Sunday, while Blackburn host Sunderland on March 20.
