Wolfsburg close in on Schalke

Wolfsburg have moved within four points of a Champions League qualification place in the Bundesliga after coming from behind to beat Hertha Berlin 2-1 this evening.

Per Skjelbred had fired the hosts into a 1-0 half-time lead, but the visitors drew level through Robin Knoche. However, Daniel Caligiuri struck a 78th-minute winner to close in on fourth-placed Schalke in the race for the top four.

The capital club began the contest marginally better than the visitors and edged ahead on 21 minutes, with Skjelbred firing home at the second time of asking after his initial shot deflected off Sami Allagui.

Dieter Hecking's men found their rhythm in the second half and soon drew level, with Knoche leaping highest to nod home the equaliser on 58 minutes.

Caligiuri fired the visitors ahead as the clock ticked toward the final 10 minutes, unleashing a fierce shot past Thomas Kraft to bag his first goal for the club in timely fashion.

There was drama in the closing minutes as Anis Ben-Hatira spurned the chance to rescue a point for Berlin by heading against the frame of the goal, but Wolfsburg held on for a valuable win.
