Wigan Athletic midfielder Shaun Maloney has described Sunday's 2-1 win over Newcastle United as a "massive" result for the club.

Arouna Kone netted a late winner at the DW Stadium as the Latics moved themselves to within three points of safety in the Premier League table.

"It was just a huge effort from us to try and go and get the winner and we were a bit fortunate in the end, but that's a massive three points for us," Maloney told Sky Sports News.

"It's disappointing that we're in this position again, but we found ourselves in it and it's up to us to get ourselves out of it."

Wigan continue their battle for Premier League survival on Saturday when they entertain Norwich City.
