Former Wigan Athletic defender Paul Scharner announces his retirement at the age of 33.

Former Wigan Athletic defender Paul Scharner has announced his retirement at the age of 33.

The Austrian recently left Bundesliga club Hamburger SV following a dispute over his contract.

Scharner enjoyed a four-year spell with Wigan before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2010.

However, he was back at the DW Stadium on loan at the end of last season and helped the Latics win the FA Cup with a surprise victory over Manchester City in the final.
