Anthony Ujah brace downs West Ham United

Two goals from Anthony Ujah give Werder Bremen a 2-1 win in a pre-season friendly against West Ham United at Upton Park.

Werder Bremen came from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win over West Ham United in a pre-season friendly at Upton Park this afternoon.

West Ham looked lively in the opening 15 minutes as Dimitri Payet and Diafra Sakho led the attack, but the duo could not get an early goal.

The home side did break the deadlock midway through the first half though as Payet delivered the ball in from out wide, leaving Sakho to rifle a volley past the Bremen keeper.

However, it took the German side just a minute to level the scores as Anthony Ujah caught Adrian out with a driven effort from 25 yards out, with the ball going between the keeper's legs on its way into the back of the net.

Payet and Sakho continued to look a dangerous pairing as the Hammers attempted to regain the advantage, but Felix Wiedwald was on hand to deny the striker a second goal.

Ujah was not to be denied his brace though as he slipped past James Tomkins just after the half-hour mark, drilling the ball into the far corner from the edge of the box.

West Ham almost got back on level terms just a few moments later as Carl Jenkinson picked out Mauro Zarate with a high cross, but the keeper punched it clear.

Ujah wanted to complete his hat-trick before the interval as he burst into the box again, but the defenders did enough to turn the ball behind for a corner, which Jannik Vestergaard could only head wide from.

Raphael Spiegel came off the bench to replace Adrian in the West Ham goal in the second half, and was tested early on as Felix Kroos blasted a powerful volley at the Swiss keeper, but he kept it out.

Manuel Lanzini has a chance to level the scores inside the final 15 minutes when he attempted to curl the ball in from a 22-yard free kick, but he lacked the power to beat Wiedwald.

Sakho made a last-gasp attempt in stoppage time, sprinting into the box to try to pick up a loose ball, but the keeper was quickly off his line to make sure the forward did not chip it in.
